The Jones’ House Remodel Process - Phase 8

Jones Final Finishes

The Jones home was built in 1966 and is 1958 square feet, with three bedrooms and two baths. They remodeled the kitchen, living room, family room, and laundry room. Each remodel included base and wall cabinets, new flooring, and electrical and plumbing work.

One of the longest lead times in the process is ordering and receiving the cabinet package. Whenever possible, we order the cabinet package as soon as the construction agreement is approved. This timing lets us work through the drywall and have the cabinets delivered right when we need them, so storage isn’t a concern. However, this wasn’t the case. With project change orders and weather delays during construction, the cabinets arrived weeks before we needed them. It’s never a good idea to store cabinets in the garage, where they're subject to a cold, damp climate. It’s best to keep them in the house so they stay acclimated to the home’s environment. With some rearranging of the children’s bedrooms and some Tetris video game experience (making the blocks to fit), we were able to make room for the cabinets for safekeeping.

The Scheduling Dance

In all home remodels, there is a period that we call the finishing dance. Bryan, the Lead Carpenter, with help from the SHP team, needed to coordinate when and what was needed to finish each room. His job was to schedule the team and our vendor partners, and to ensure that each room was scheduled and assigned to the right combination of cabinet installers, plumbers, electricians, and tilers. At the same time, make sure all materials are available and on hand.

The process can become quite chaotic, and it’s important that the master schedule is followed and that each vendor partner and the Shirey team meet their deadlines. This is not always an easy task. For the Joneses’ remodel, this process worked well, with a few hiccups as expected, and we handled each issue as it arose.

Kitchen

The kitchen is the most complicated room to remodel. There are cabinets, flooring, countertops, electrical and plumbing, and appliances.
With all the walls in place and the electrical pulled, the floor goes in next. An area that most people don’t realize is how the cabinets line up with the flooring. They must be leveled and aligned. Before installing the kitchen cabinets, Bryan and his team placed plywood on the floor under the cabinets, which would now be level with the tile floor that was installed. The cabinets had plywood boxes. The wood species was cherry with a Truffle finish. The knobs and pulls were brushed pewter.

Once the base cabinets are in place, the countertop fabricators are called in to take measurements and set up templates. The template shows space for any item that needs a hole.
Counters
Sinks
Plumbing fixtures
Cooktop
Downdraft
Soap dispenser
Garbage disposal
Air switch
The client had previously selected the countertop materials, which the fabricator will now cut to the template. This usually takes about two weeks. Once the fabricator places the countertop with all the holes in place, it’s the electrician’s, plumber’s, and tilers’ turn to go to work.

The plumber is called in to make the hookups, install the fixtures, and request the plumbing final inspection. Right on top of the plumber, the tile backsplashes are being installed.

We want to call in the electrician after the tile is completed so the outlet cover plates can be installed at the same time as the remaining surface-mounted lights. Then the electrician can request their electrical final inspection.

For the kitchen backsplash, we installed 5” x 4” porcelain tile in color Fawn. The changeover from the existing wood floors to the 12" x 24" porcelain tile in Waystone Pear for the kitchen and dining areas provides a consistent, beautiful transition.

Once the countertops are installed, the finish line is right around the corner.

Family Room, Fireplace, and Laundry Room

As the floor tiles are being placed in the kitchen, Bryan’s team is in high gear, getting the interior wrapped as far as possible. They are installing the fireplace, cabinets, and flanking crown molding.

Around the new welcoming fireplace, we installed a hickory cabinet with a midnight finish on either side of the fireplace.

Once the family room is set up, they start on the laundry room cabinets and floor.
In the laundry room, the cabinets were plywood boxes with a moss green paint finish. For the countertops, we installed a 3 cm engineered quartz countertop in Alabaster white with a polished finish. The laundry floor was laid with 12" x 12" ceramic tile in the color Jewel Grey.

Exterior

While all this was going on inside, Brian also scheduled time to work on the exterior. For the exterior, we built a much more functional front porch that added curb appeal. Our goal was to complete the full project, allowing the Jones family to move back in once the interior was finished.

Move In Day

Because the Jones family has been involved throughout the remodeling project, we couldn’t do the big reveal you see on a made-up TV show. When it was time to turn the home back over, the family was overjoyed to see it completed. They were so excited to move back in and start enjoying it. Now their dreams have come to fruition with a wide-open floor plan, a gorgeous kitchen with an island that accommodates family and friends, a welcoming fireplace, a dining space in the right place, and a laundry room that is a joy to enter.
